WRT54GL firmware

I'd like to tell you about one of my lenses today. It's a bit technical, and deals with the process of replacing the default firmware on Linksys WRT54GL routers with a custom one from third party developers. You see, this cheap-ish $60 router lets you install any Linux-based firmware on it and many people take advantage of this, replacing the default software installed on the router with something more powerful. There are several different third party firmware projects, such as DD-WRT or Tomato - and I review most of them in my WRT54G firmware lens.

I just love looking at stats and graphs (even when I should be working on my lenses instead), so I will be posting these in every one of my lens reviews.

I had the idea to create this lens when I personally bought the WRT54GL router and tried many kinds of different firmware for a few days until I finally found the one that was working perfectly for me. Then I just sat down and wrote some reviews - in a light and not very professional style, I guess. I didn't do much "optimization" at first, but later I placed it in forum signatures where I used to ask for help about different firmware, and played around with my tags. However, Google seems to really "hate" this lens, because it doesn't appear in the search results. I even asked for help in SquidU forums (which were very helpful, especially thefluffanutta, the creator SquidUtils), and it got a few Google hits before disappearing from SERPs again.

I feel somewhat disapointed that it doesn't get Google traffic at all nowadays, since I feel like it's a pretty good lens (but don't we all think about our lenses this way...). I'm looking to update the content a bit sometime in the future. In the mean time, it is getting some pretty good lens rankings and bringing in the cash every month, although I don't think it will be able to stay in the top tier if it doesn't start getting more search engine traffic soon.
